What to do when water damage strikes

Water damage strikes unexpectedly and without warning. It can strike at anytime of the day or night and it can wreak havoc on your home or business. Water damage can be caused by burst pipes, burst hot water systems, overflowing bath tubs and sinks, heavy rain and storm damage. No matter the cause the end result is always the same – excess water in your property. Stress and panic can easily set in as you see all this water damage taking place in your property right before your eyes. As difficult as it may seem at the time it is important to stay calm and focussed on what you need to do to stay safe and to reduce the water damage that is occurring to your property.

Act fast to minimise the water damage

The key to minimising any water damage is to act fast and stop the source of the water damage straight away if possible. If a burst pipe is causing the water damage then locate the water mains to your property and turn the water of straight away. If water is entering your property via the ceiling due to heavy rain and storm damage then place some buckets or containers underneath the area to catch the water. You can even put some towels down to minimise the spread and to help soak up the water.

Some things you can do to minimise the damage while waiting for help to arrive

  • Stay safe – this is always the most important thing. Be aware that there is an increased risk of slipping and falling. Be aware that there can be some dangers with electricity due to the water. If the water is contaminated from a sewage back-up and overflow, then there will be serious health risks due to this contamination. If the water has entered your property via the ceiling due to heavy rain, then the ceiling can be at risk of collapsing in. If unsure just stay clear of the water damaged area.
  • Stop the flow of water if possible. If the water damage is from a burst pipe or due to water flowing via your mains water, then locate your mains water tap and turn the water off to your house immediately. If the water damage is from rain water entering via the ceiling, then place buckets or plastic containers underneath the area to catch the water.
  • Turn the electricity off to the area only if it is safe to do so. Never stand in water while turning electricity off.
  • Place towels and sheets down to stem the flow of water and to help soak the water up.
  • Now that you have stopped the source of the water damage and stemmed the flow of water, call the Professional Team at Flood Fixers on 1300 4 FLOOD and we will make our way to you as fast as possible.
  • If water is starting to condensate and run down walls and windows, then open the windows slightly to the water damaged areas. Turn your air conditioning on and turn it up to the high heat setting. The air conditioner will act as a dehumidifier and the extra heat will assist with water evaporation. If you have ceiling fans or even small pedestal fans turn them on to add air flow to the water damaged area.
  • If safe to do so, move furniture and items away from the water affected areas. If some furniture pieces are too heavy to move, you can place some alfoil underneath the legs of the furniture to protect them. Lift your curtains up off the floor if they are being affected.
  • Take some photos or even video the water damaged area and any damage to your items. This is helpful if you are planning on making an insurance claim for the water damage event.
