What is Top Down Carpet Drying?

Top down carpet drying is a water damage drying method where the carpet is dried being left in place (in situ). This method has many advantages and is a very convenient way to dry wet carpet. We would recommend top down drying in cases were there could be issues with carpet shrinkage, when the water damage is only minor and the carpet is not completely saturated. When carpet is wet and saturated it can lose its strength and integrity until its completely dried. Lifting carpet up to enable drying underneath can damage the carpet even further. Top down drying will eliminate this undue stress on the wet saturated carpet.

Thorough water extraction required

When top down drying, it is important to remove as much water and moisture from the carpet and underlay as possible. Time and care needs to be taken during the water extraction process to ensure as much moisture as possible is removed from the carpet underlay. If the carpet and underlay is not properly extracted and its left too wet, the entire top down drying process will be unsuccessful. The top down drying process will also take considerably longer to dry as there is no direct air flow getting to the underlay or to the sub-floor.

Water extraction tools

The water claw is a specialised water extraction tool that has been developed to increase the amount of water being extracted from wet carpet and underlay. This is a plastic tool with a handle and a bottom plate, with several holes in it designed to break the surface tension and increase the air flow. Further to this, the technician stands on the plate with the additional weight forcing even more water up and out of the saturated carpet underlay. The water claw water extraction tool will dramatically increase the volume of water being extracted from the wet carpet and underlay.

The extreme extractor is the ultimate water extraction tool for wet saturated carpets. No other extraction tool can pull out as much water from wet carpet and underlay. The extreme extractor is a self-propelled unit with specialised suction rollers that the technician stands on and rides across the wet carpet forcing the water up and out of the carpet and underlay.

Drying process

Once the water extraction is completed and as much water and moisture as possible has been removed from the carpet and underlay, it is now time to begin the top down carpet drying process. In most cases a combination of air movers and dehumidifiers will be installed to initiate the drying process. In some cases, heat drying equipment can be installed as well to speed up the drying process.
